Road Noise is a portfolio originally shown in 1997 at the Print Center Gallery in Philadelphia, PA. Since then I have expanded the images. These images are a record of a moment in time in which I encountered, witnessed, and photographed, the messages and talismans of those traveling before me. Brief encounters with surfaces facing the road.

 

My interest in road images comes from my earliest childhood memories of car travel crisscrossing the entire American continent every year for the first twelve year of my life. I would stare out the window for hours traveling as fast as my dad could drive on the two lane black top highways of the nineteen fifties, hoping for signs of life to appear. I kept traveling; it is in my blood and in my heart.  James Syme 2013
